Exposed to Asbestos? Here’s What You Should Do to Protect Yourself
If you or someone you love has been exposed to asbestos, then you may be aware of how risky that exposure was. Whether it has been a year or 20 years, there is a risk that the exposure could lead to asbestosis, mesothelioma or other diseases.
If you are exposed at any time, it’s important to start keeping records about that exposure. Here’s more on what you should do.
As Soon as You Know You Were Exposed, Head to the Doctor
If you know that you’ve been exposed to asbestos, go to the doctor. Even if you aren’t sick, you want to have that information listed in your medical documents. This will also help your doctor know what to watch out for as time passes. If you are already having trouble breathing or are experiencing pain in your chest, letting your doctor know that you were exposed to asbestos may help them make a diagnosis.
Get a Diagnosis as Soon as Possible After Symptoms Begin
If you are already monitoring yourself for signs of asbestos-related illnesses, make sure you seek medical attention and get a diagnosis as soon as symptoms begin. Tests that may prove you have asbestosis, mesothelioma or other related illnesses include computerized tomography scans, chest X-rays and others.
Once you have a diagnosis, it’s a good idea to talk to your attorney about making a workers’ compensation claim or filing a civil lawsuit against whoever exposed you to this dangerous material. Your ability to make a claim may be limited because of the statute of limitations, so it’s important to make a claim as soon as possible.
