Monsanto Roundup Cancer Cases

For the second time in several months, a jury has ruled that Monsanto’s popular weedkiller, Roundup, was a “substantial factor” in causing someone’s cancer.

The president of the Environmental Working Group responded, “the testimony that informed the jury’s decision was Bayer-Monsanto hiding Roundup’s carcinogenic properties, manipulating the science and cozying-up with EPA so it would not have to warn consumers of its dangerous product.”

Much of the settlement cost for Monsanto is the result of punitive damages for reported negligence in determining if their products caused cancer, as well as what should have been done to prevent it. Monsanto allegedly changed their research intentionally so no connections could be made between cancer and glyphosate, which is the active ingredient in Roundup.

Reports have shown that the diseases associated with Roundup use are non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, hairy cell leukemia, and B-cell lymphoma. Though these are the forms of cancer most commonly recognized in connection with Roundup use, it’s not clear whether other forms of cancer could also be linked to the Monsanto product.
